The Gloucester Old Spot is a well known traditional British rare breed, renowned for its outdoor capability.

The Iron Down herd of Gloucester Old Spot pigs is mostly run in grass paddocks. This old 'orchard' breed is renowned for the flavour of its meat and benefits from an outdoor existence. The sow, weaner and fattener ration includes a mix of wheat and barley grown on the farm.

In wet, cold winter months finishing pigs are run in strawed yards, and their summer quarters include 'wallows' so pigs can cover themselves in mud to avoid sunburn.

 

 

Outdoor rearing, slow growth to maturity and a healthy ration all combine to provide a superb flavour to pork joints, hams and sausages that is not found in intensively reared stock.
